...BIG news for ALL Classic Movie fans...

...just got this e-mail from 'Movies Unlimited', noting the AWESOME news that Columbia (Sony) is planning on 'opening up the vaults' quite soon, not unlike the Warner Archives series... oh, sorry for the honking link - hope it works for ya... I need to learn how to 'rename' links...

ALSO, catch the last line, which notes that FOX is believed to be doing the same early in 2011... True Gingerologists already know where I am heading with this...

...that's right; the epic search for 'Hat Check Girl' may be nearing its end!!! Hopefully Fox will dig a good copy up and release it... I just thumbed thru the 'Films of GR' book, and the 'general review' notes that "The pre-code script gave Ginger a marvelous opportunity to demonstrate what she could do with apt wisecracks and risqué situations...her glib Jessie King became the first of many worldly-wise girlfriend roles that would hold her in good stead until stardom came along."
...yep, we need to be unearthing this one in short order, you fine feathered friends from FOX!!! ...and while y'all are at it, a clean copy of 'Broadway Bad' (Ginger AND Joan Blondell) is sorely needed, as well... :-]

KIG in GingerFall, Y'all!!!

  1. Awesome! I hope they rerelease some Ginger movies that were available once upon a time on VHS but never made it over to DVD, or are no longer out on DVD like Magnificent Doll.

On a non-Ginger related note, I hope Fox releases more Betty Grable movies, specifically Diamond Horseshoe. They've been particularly tight-fisted about releasing her movies to DVD.

  2. Well, well, well!

Might have to do with the upcoming ***100th*** Hasn't it?

Need more Ginger films of those years anyway, so it's coming handy.

  4. ...update - here is the list from Sony/Columbia for the first 'round' of 'archive' movies... not a HEAP of 'pre WWII' titles, but hopefully they will crank out more waves of these... a hopeful start, anyway... here's the link:

Gingerella - the Columbia deal is cool, but honestly, not that many Ginger movies under Columbia...'It Had To Be You' and 'Tight Spot' are about it... 'Mag Doll' is from Universal, not sure if they are part of the Columbia deal... actually, Fox and Paramount would be able to pretty much fill the 'missing links' of the Ginger catalouge... here's hoping!!! It's good in general to see the other studios take WB's lead in offering the 'back catlouge' for anyone that is interested... with today's technology, all these should be quite accessible and obtainable.

CS - What WILL happen for Ginger's 100th? Would be VERY nice to see WB put out a honking box set of her 'primary' RKO features, anyway... like the recent 'Bogie' set. Maybe it's in the works...

Camille - yep I REALLY want to see this one... even with Ginger in a 'supporting' role... seems to have garnered pretty good reviews when it was released... just weird it isn't out there, accessible, anyway... there have been a few rumors that folks have seen a 'original reel' version of it, but in pretty rough shape...

JH - not sure if Ida had many movies with Columbia - wasn't she with Warner? But maybe future titles will show up.

  5. I understand the Columbia titles run more towards the likes of "The 30-Foot Bride Of Candy Rock," which is nice if you like seeing a giant Dorothy Provine, but it would be good to see some more of that studio's early output.

Getting back to Ginger stuff, a photo of her with Carole Lombard has been found (I never knew one existed!); they're shown with designers Travis Banton and Howard Greer. Just included it in my latest entry at "Carole & Co."

If you're aware of any other Rogers-Lombard photos, let me know.

  6. Huey: Ida made a few films at Columbia in the late '30s, The Lady and the Mob and The Lone Wolf Spy Hunt. And Road House in 1948, but that's already on DVD. It would be nice to have "official" copies of those two early films, though. She didn't sign with Warner's until 1940.

  7. VP81955: Thanks for the link! I have seen that one before... can't remember who the dudes are - not that the dudes really matter, mind you - just Ginger AND Carol! :-) I will be on the lookout for other pics - BTW - nice blog! I have it as a 'fav', but not sure how to 'follow' when it is not a 'blogspot' site...I am pretty helpless when it comes to linking and all that...

JH: Here's hoping Columbia will delve a bit farther back... there should be gobs of movies they can release...maybe they are 'cleaning them up' some... 'Lady and the Mob', eh? sounds intriguing... I need to catch up on my movies!
