GingerFilms on DVD...

...well, first off, hope all you Gingerologists out there are having a grand holiday season thus far, and will continue to do so! The Huey camp had a great Thanksgiving, and is gearing up for Christmas... always hectic, but its always cool when you have kids... the circle of life deal, ya understand...
Kinda bummed about my ol' Alma Mater, UAB, 'dropping' football... under some pretty heinous circumstances... UAB is part of the UA system, which also includes campuses in Tuscaloosa and Huntsville... well, UAT is the 'flagship', and has all the votes on the Board of Trustees... long story short, they have been 'kneecapping' the program from Day One, and finally decided to kill it... but there's quite a bit of 'pushback' from the UAB community, as well as local government... so stay tuned...  meanwhile... we need to just break away from the UA system, period... thus, #freeUAB!!!

Thinking of a new post, I started doing 'inventory' of my DVDs of GingerFilms, with the delivery of the last quartet of recent releases...and y'know, we have the majority of films available... we G-ologists are pretty fortunate in this sense, when compared to fans of other actors / actresses who unfortunately have 'lost' films...with the appearance of Hat Check Girl, ALL of Ginger's 'feature films' are out there in SOME form!

With that, and in keeping with the superficial side of the Season, we want it ALL, right? So, let's all crank out a list, shall we?

Place the following GingerFilms currently unavailable on DVD in your preferred order for availability:

The films in question are the following, in chronological order:

Young Man of Manhattan

Queen High

The Sap from Syracuse

Follow the Leader

Honor Among Lovers

The Tip-Off

Carnival Boat

Hat Check Girl

Broadway Bad

Professional Sweetheart

Don't Bet On Love

Sitting Pretty

Twenty Million Sweethearts

In Person

Tender Comrade

Lady In The Dark

It Had To Be You

Twist Of Fate

The First Traveling Saleslady

Harlow

...yeah, there's still quite a few (20, to be exact), but considering Ginger had 74 films, plus some shorts, this list is pretty short... and don't fret about studio ownership and the 'real probability' of a restoration / release... just assume ALL will be available (nice thought, eh?)

Just put your list in the comments section, and we'll all compare notes...OK? OK!!!

Again, we here at Gingerology hope you all have a Great and Meaningful Christmas, and a Most Prosperous New Year!!! ...but we'll talk again before that...

KIG, y'all!

UPDATE - 12/27/14:
...well, here's my list...

1. Hat Check Girl - just because most of us haven't seen it, right?

2. In Person - weird that this one is not on DVD already... my fave of the 20.

3. Sitting Pretty - a good film - if they can restore it and get Ginger's last line in the 'Dream Walking' tune in full without skipping, that would RULE!

4. Professional Sweetheart - Ginger at her sassiest...

5. Twenty Million Sweethearts - love Ginger singing Out For No Good... this film is one of Dale Tremont's faves as well...

6. Broadway Bad - Ginger AND Joan Blondell - nuff said. a good scrubbing is needed.

7. Tender Comrade - Ginger is SO fetching in this one...

8. The Tip-Off - To me, Ginger's first 'substantial' role, as Baby Face... love it.

9. Queen High - a VERY cute young Ginger singing and dancing around...

10. It Had To Be You - a film that has grown on me over time...

11. Lady In The Dark - needed if anything for a clean clear copy of the Jenny saga...

12. The Sap from Syracuse - another cute Ginger effort, this time with Oakie.

13. Twist Of Fate - a more mature Ginger in a different role, with Bergerac.

14. Don't Bet On Love - Standard role, but with Ayres.

15. Young Man of Manhattan - Ginger's first gig, as Puff the magic flapper.

16. Carnival Boat - a standard 'love interest' role in a cast full of Ax Men.

17. The First Traveling Saleslady - Ginger's last RKO effort... a cute film overall along with Channing.

18. Harlow - would like to see this in a 'normal' format if possible - the original was shot in some 'megascope' camera technique or something, which results in folks being chopped off (at least in my copy).

19. Follow the Leader - marginal role for Ginger - vehicle for Ed Wynn.

20. Honor Among Lovers - VERY minimal Ginger role... film itself is not bad, tho...and definitely needs a good 'revamping'.

GingerTrivia!!! Topic: Varmints in GingerFilms...

...well, first off, this is Gingerology post #350! Not sure of the significance of that, but...just an FYI...of course, thank to all who have kept up with G-ology over time... this post will hopefully be one of many more, at a more frequent rate... and BTW, this pic above of Ginger walking a large feline varmint is just SO cool...

...and with that, the topic proper is... Trivia questions regarding GingerFilms which have animals in them! Ready? OK, then!

Question #1: What was the name of the 'main monkey' in the film "Monkey Business" who mixed the 'magic elixir'?

Question #2: In the film "Shall We Dance", how many dogs was Petrov (Fred) walking simultaneously when he was trying to impress Linda (Ginger) on the ship's deck?

Question #3: What kind of varmint was the 'court reporter' in the 'Jenny dream sequence' from the film "Lady In The Dark?"

Question #4: What was the name of the monkey who tried to help Huck out with Sherry in the film "Follow The Fleet?"

Question #5: In Ginger's opening scene in the film "Fifth Avenue Girl" as Mary Gray, she asked Mr Borden if he had a  ?????  in his pocket...

Question #6: What was the name of Anytime Annie's doggie in the film "42nd Street?"

Question #7: What movie sees Ginger's first appearance in bed, being awakened by a phone call, and panning over to another bed with a doggie on it?

Question #8: What varmint-related item was Rose Gilray (Ginger) trying to sell in the film "The First Traveling Saleslady?"

Question #9: How did Ben Castle (Jack Carson) mount his horse in the film "The Groom Wore Spurs?"

Question #10: In the film "I'll Be Seeing You", what type of dog attacked Zac Morgan (Joseph Cotten)?

Question #11: We all know about Ginger's ostrich feather dress from the film "Top Hat"; but what earlier GingerFilm saw her using an ostrich feather fan to GREAT effect?

Question #12: What was the name that Irene (Ginger) gave to the doggie that brought her and Vernon together in the film "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle?"

--------------

...whelp, hope this was an interesting one for you...I would have had trouble on quite a few of these...as always, see the 'comments' section for the answers... good luck!

KIG, y'all!!!

GingerNovember...

...is dang near OVAH!!!

This month has flown by... and a late Thanksgiving means an early Christmas... so lotsa stuff going on for all of us. Still hoping to get back into a 'regular deal' regarding posting... a few things are 'pending', so we'll see...

BUT, there's at least time for a few GingerNotes, right?

...first off, it's been a bit too cold for mid-November, y'all... Ginger has her furs already in heavy rotation, so no worries there... BTW, this is SUCH a cool pic...Ginger is so 'fresh' looking! Just perfect! Hope all of y'all who have ALREADY had heaps of snow are hanging in there... looks like a long winter, unfortunately...

Well, with Turkey Day fast approaching (as noted perfectly by Ginger at the '58 Macy's Parade...), guess the big question is, "what am I THANKFUL for?" Well, there's been quite a few good things this year for Hu, with the biggest being a successful eye surgery for a detached retina... left untreated would have resulted in losing sight... but it's great now! Still a bit of 'distortion', but will have to get new glasses soon... I have one more 'check' by the surgeon in January to make sure all is well, then get fitted for new 'cheaters'... I will probably forgo contact lenses at this station in life...have been hearing some bad stuff about them lately, anyway. and of course, family and friends are VERY much on Hu's 'thanks' list...which of course includes Gingerologists... y'all are the GREATEST!!!

...HEY! Hu FINALLY ordered all the GingerFilms which have been released on DVD this year... 'You Said a Mouthful', 'Magnificent Doll', 'Forever Female', and 'Cinderella'... so HoHoHoToHu! :-)

yupyupyup... sheer awesomeness!

...well, hope all is well with everyone out there - of course I will yak with most of y'all on FB... if not, you REALLY need to get hooked up over there, as there is pretty much an unlimited supply of Gingery Goodness happening perpetually... which is AWESOME!

Oh yeah, just a few days left on the 'hair color' poll...looks like 'non-blonde' has gotten quite a bit more love this go-round, but blonde is tough to beat... if you haven't yet...go VOTE!!!

Until later...

KIG, y'all!!!

New GingerPoll...which COULd get a bit 'hairy'...

OK, y'all... sorry for the length between posts, but I'm back with a GingeryVengeance!

...with...a...POLL!

We've had this one a few years back, but there's a lot of newer G-ologists here, so, here it is:

Which hair color do you prefer on Miss Rogers...

BLONDE...
...or NON-BLONDE?
...yeah, it's a pretty tough one, honestly... but VOTE!!!

Check out the poll at the top right of the page...I'll leave it open for a bit, just to get a decent number of votes...

Hope all is well for everyone!  KIG!

Happy Columbus Day, Y'all!

...which, of course, always brings this classic GingerTune to mind...
...one of my faves...love the way she is so clear here, with little or no 'embellishment' of her true singing voice, it sounds... and it's cool that Ira wrote the first few lines for Ginger herself (hence the 'Missouri' reference...). And like many tunes, there's a 'second stanza'...most of y'all probably know it, but just in case, here it is:
"They all laughed at Rockerfeller Center - Now they're fighting to get in.
They all laughed at Whitney and his cotton gin.
They all laughed at Fulton and his steamboat, Hershey and his chocolate bar.
Ford and his Lizzie - Kept the laughers busy; That's how people are.
They laughed at me - wanting you, said it would be Hello, Good-bye;
But oh, you came through - now they're eating humble pie.
They all said we'd never get together; darling, let's take a bow,
For Ho, Ho, Ho, Who's got the last laugh now?"
(c) 1937 Gershwin Publishing Corporation, N.Y.

...just wonder if they had a few too many 'brand names' noted in this stanza (Hershey, Ford)... not sure how the 'product placement' deal would work (especially since Ginger hawked Dodges....just sayin'...) ...but it's always cool to see this and 'hear' Ginger singing this stanza (hopefully I'm not the only one who can 'hear' that... :-)  )
-------------
Well, hope to be getting back to more detailed GingerPosts soon, as its been a few since the last 'real' post... the eye is in quite good shape, but will need a new prescription for focus or whatever... Next Monday (or as we say in South Gingerville, 'Monday week') I have my final 'follow-up' with the doc.

Thanks again to all for your thoughts and prayers - they worked wonders!  The Gingerology community is an awesome one, ain't it?  :-)

Until next time...

...HueyNews...

...hey y'all! Just an update from the Huey Camp...

I've been unfortunately neglecting G-ology the past few weeks, as there have been quite a few events which have popped up in September... the kids are in full swing at school, football season (BIG deal in South Gingerville), and my daughter is playing volleyball - doing pretty well for the first go-around with it! And of course homework is something we all collaborate on... so just hectic times, early bedtimes, etc... but hopefully things will 'settle in' in a few more weeks...just in time for the holidays! oof.

The big news, tho, is that Hu has to have 'outpatient' eye surgery tomorrow (September 19) - as a detached retina has reared its ugly head... left untreated it WILL result in losing eyesight, so... no alternative... SO... as a result, I'll be out of commission for a week or so... but, going to one of the best places in the world, literally, to do this - UAB - so no worries about the results. I told them to just knock me OUT and wake me when its OVAH!!!

So, with that, I'm planning to get back into the Gingery groove by the end of the month!  In the meantime, y'all...

Keep It Gingery!

...75 years ago today...

...would have been an awesome time to be outside of Grauman's Chinese Theater!
...one of the many items I need to see and mark off my 'GingerBucketList'... I know a few of y'all have seen the 'slab', along with all the other ones out there (including Fred's right next to Ginger's as shown above)... any info regarding the current status of this awesome Ginger Landmark would be appreciated!

Hi, y'all!!!

...just checking in to say.... Hu is still VERY much here! It's been a 'back to the grind' for the kids the last couple of weeks, and that trickles down to me and Mrs. Huey as well... so... once things get 'settled in' with the young-uns, I will 'resume normal programming'...in the meanwhile, check this awesome pic out, an 'alternate' from the Gay Divorcee shot, one of which was the original Gingerology 'banner pic'!
just SOOOOOO killer!!!

Stay Tuned, y'aall!!!

...ANOTHER GingerFilm hits DVD...

...this time, it's "You Said a Mouthful", the Joe E. Brown vehicle that has Ginger as the awesome female lead! It's available now, released by Warner Archives (see link at the end of the post)... which makes the EIGHTEENTH GingerFilm available from WBA... well over 20 percent of Ginger's entire catalog! So again, MEGA props to Warner!!!
...between this and the upcoming titles available from other companies, we are getting pretty dang close to having the entire GingerFilm catalog available, y'all...which is quite the feat considering so many of the films from the early 30s have been lost... GingerFans are pretty dang fortunate!

Hit this sentence for the link to WB Archives!

...hope y'all get to pick this one up...it's a pretty neat film... typical Joe E. Brown histrionics, but they're pretty funny in general... AND, hope everyone is well out there, and Keeping It Gingery, of course!!!

GingerAugust...

...is here! ...not sure what it entails, but...
...this pic is a pretty bodacious start! It's also cool to check out all the background (although it's VERY tough to get past the foreground...), which is a pretty neat view of Ginger's Gilcrest Drive crib... I believe the cupola at the right is part of her place, as the pool/court area was built at the 'high point' of the lot... and all the ironwork 'walls' back there are still there, at least the last report I had...and from what showed up on MapQuest (...yeah, like y'all don't MapQuest or Google earth Ginger houses!)

Well, a few 'housekeeping' issues... ...as Ginger proves that she looks fab in ANYthing...
FIRST - the 'Ginger on TV' feature has been removed as a 'page' (the 'bullet point' links on the top right of the home page), and will now just be on the 'main page', which is the more direct route anyway...
SECOND - after a bit of indecision, the 'This Day in Gingerology' page (the 'complete year' list) has also been deleted, as the replication of adding items to it along with my 'main list' in my computer proved to be sketchy... but of course the feature itself will remain, and in fact will hopefully get a bit augmented if Hu's efforts are fruitful...
THIRD - just noticed it's been purt near a YEAR since the last GingerReview... which is pretty inexcusable... SO, I'm getting back with it, el pronto... stay tuned... no, REALLY... :-)
FOURTH - The GingerFaceBook Community is just incredible... SO much info to be had there, along with an ENDLESS array of GingerPics, such as the one below - which is one of my 'instant faves'!!! If you haven't already, ya REALLY need to join us over there...

...and oh yeah! I received my '4-R Milk Bottle' - pretty awesome! I haven't even taken it out of the 'bubble' wrap, but you can see thru it, and its awesome! Hope to be able to display it sooner or later...most likely when my boy 'Bam-Bam' is a good bit older... oh, like, 42 or something... ;-)

...We here at Gingerology sincerely hope everyone is having a Great Gingery Summer! Hope to see ya over on FaceBook, as well as here, of course...

KIG!

...COOL Gingerbilia opportunity!

...OK, y'all, get THIS: TCM is offering ORIGINAL "4-R" Milk Bottles on their website - these are the actual ones used to deliver milk from her Oregon ranch back in the 40s, and include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). For you newer G-ologists, "4-R" refers to Rogers Rogue River Ranch, which was near Medford, Oregon. Ginger spent a lot of time there in the 40s, as it was generally a 'vacation / retreat' for her. Above is one of the bovines she cared for...pretty dang cool!

Here's the link to the site: Official Ginger Rogers Milk Bottle

...and to verify the authenticity even further, Ms. Roberta Olden commented on the Ginger Rogers IMDb message board (see the "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GINGER!!!" post, which I actually made in 2013, but resurfaced for GingerTennial +3 in 2014) that she has teamed up with TCM in order to make these available to Gingerologists - here's part of her post regarding it (hopefully she doesn't mind I transcribe it here):

"In honor of her birthday, I would like to alert her fans to a special partnership I have made with Turner Classic Movies. They have agreed to put the glass milk bottles from the 4R Ranch Dairy in their collectible shop on the TCM website. There are a limited number of them available, so I have put the web address in case anyone is interested."

Now of course, this has ALWAYS been a big 'want' for Huey's Gingerbilia collection (as the pic I took at the GingerCentury exhibit at B.U. indicates)...so...well, you know, Visa and all that works pretty well for these sorts of things...until next month's bill shows up, anyway... but anyway, I'll follow up with y'all when I receive mine (I know a few of y'all have already 'popped' on one as well)... of course, at the end of the day, its a bottle... but a VERY cool one that really reminds us how 'go-getter' Ginger really was!

With that, it's good to be back from vacation - had a great time at the beach last week! But ready to get back to work...I guess...

KIG, y'all!

...HAPPY GINGERTENNIAL +3, Y'ALL!!!

...Just checking in on our girl's birthday, from my vacation (which is going quite well, BTW...) to wish all of y'all a very happy GingerTennial +3!!!  Hope folks are watching the 'mini GingerFilm-a-thon' on TCM this morning... ...and be sure to eat ice cream, play tennis (or a t least watch some), wear pink, and watch, listen, and or read something Gingery!!!

Hope y'all have a great one, and I'll catch up with y'all this weekend!!!

Until then...

...a Fifth of Gingerology...

...is pretty dang AWESOME!!!...Thanks to all you Gingerologists out there who have kept this blog going! It's always SO cool to interact with y'all, here as well as on FaceBook...it's truly what keeps it rolling.
The pic above was the header to awesome blog of Miss Beth Rose, "Finding Ginger", which inspired me to 'whup up' my own blog, which debuted on July 5, 2009 (which seems eons ago...) Initially to be an 'open format', it soon became apparent that there really wasn't anything which needed to be discussed except...well, you know!
I've been VERY fortunate to 'get to know' many great fans of Ginger, and of classic films in general, by this blog... and although it seems that FB has somewhat 'diminished' blogging, hopefully there's still a spot in the big ol' internet to keep these sites going.

The original header pic for G-ology was this one above, which is from The Gay Divorcee - well, publicity shots for the film, anyway... but Ginger just looks incredible here, as her eyes are quite intensely beautiful...and thus it's still one of my all time faves. But one of the 'first generation' G-ologists, Maria, did the incredible colorized pic of Miss Tanka in gold perfection, which immediately became G-ology's new header, as well as Hu's 'avatar' or whatever ya call that...

And although G-ology was created 7/5/09, it really took a few weeks to figure it all out... the following is the first 'Gingery' post I...um...'posted' , on 8/4/09:

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Well, I think I may have it going here...

I finally got a few things sorted out on this site - hopefully will have a bit more 'meat' to it... First of all, changed the name - 'jwhueyblog' really didn't mean anything - actually, the only reason I originally set up a blog was to be able to post on Beth's 'Finding Ginger' site!
Anyway, 'Gingerology' sounds a bit more interesting... since we all are 'searching and digging' for those Ginger movies which, for some asinine reason, are NOT on DVD (I'm still waiting for the 75-DVD Box Set with all her movies, digitally remastered, of course, loaded with extra features, rare outtakes, audio commentary, etc., along with the complete audio recordings of VKM, digitally remastered to pristine condition... and also containing a 'coffee table'-size 400-page photo book... has anyone heard if they are getting it out by this Christmas this year?? :-O ...well, one can hope, I guess.)
ANYWAY, I also added a list of my 'Ginger Search' travails, VKM movies I have possession of in one form or more... I have plowed through eBay as of late, and really bolstered the list... everything received so far has been in pretty fair shape...the only thing is, be quick about it... there was a VHS of 'Lady in the Dark' (quickly becoming one of my favorites, as seen on YT), and I was going to bid on it or whatever, but just didn't do it quick enough. But stuff is constantly changing on there, so it's worth messing with - and typically the prices are reasonable.
SO, hopefully that gives y'all a bit of 'update' on where Gingerology is headed... I will put my long-winded observations on here, but still faithfully post on Beth's cool site!
Please feel free to reply, and hope you 'jump on' this blog, along with others concerning VKM!!!
Thanks, JW

...one thing that jumps out at me is the fact that... there just weren't that many GingerFilms available at the time... as compared to NOW, anyway... and it appears that the Saga of Jenny was only available via the YouTube clip, but had me pretty well mezmorized... duh!

...but over time, we all 'obtained' GingerFilms, thru various and sundry means... until we each had purt near every one...except... Hat Check girl, of course. Now, here's a Huey Idiosyncrasy you may not be aware of... but, I am VERY big on obtaining an artist's ENTIRE output, good, bad or indifferent... SO, when HCG was unaccounted for, it really was a bummer... but HEY! Thanks to latter-day Gingerologist extraordinaire, GingerPeachy, there are restored copies of it, and will most likely find its way into the 'common Gingerologists' hands one of these days... AWESOME!!!

...as to my fave GingeryMoments, there's quite a few over the last five years... but the top 3 HAVE to be... standing in front of Ginger's Independence, Missouri birth house at 100 West Moore Street for the GingerTennial on 7/16/11...where I ALSO met Kat and Annelise... just a cool moment in time!
Also, the opportunity to check out the Ginger Century exhibit at Boston University... well worth the mega drive from South Gingerville. The wickedawesome (that's a 'Boston Expression', y'all...) pic of Ginger against a black background is one I was assigned to capture...and the result was pretty great, if I say so myself!  ...and the third most Gingery moment is probably 'split' between the aforementioned 'discovery' of HCG, and Ginger's dominant victory in Monte's Classic Actress Tournament, which affirmed that there are quite a few Gingerologists out there, and they are pretty dang tenacious!!!

We've had quite a few posts which ended up a lot more 'involved' than I had imagined... which was great!!! The most interesting one was this one regarding one of Ginger's most 'adversarial' directors, Mark Sandrich... and Huey's 'reverse psychology' theory (as supported by Exhibit 'A' above...)
Sandrich Post - July 24, 2010

...and, in general, just some GREAT stuff regarding our girl... including a musical slant including:
...Ginger jamming on accordions...

...pianos...

...conga drums...
...and of course rocking the squawk box...

...Topics which got our Gingery dander up, such as the Sandrich deal above, among others:
...the renaming of the Ginger Rogers Craterian Theater in Medford, Oregon...grrrrr.....

...TCM's misstep of not airing even ONE GingerFilm on July 16, 2011 (the schedule above is pretty nice, tho...)...

...and the incomprehensible lack of activity on the "Official Ginger Rogers Website"... we REALLY should just pool all our $$$ and buy the rights to this and do it up RIGHT, y'all...

...there were plenty of varmints Ginger encountered, such as...
...charmed canines...

...happening horses...

...fortunate felines...

...providential poultry...

...and lucky lions...or...um, whatever this critter is...

...and other awesomely 'random' GingerPics, such as...
...GingerCamera... this one ended up as a cool background pic on the TCM set... OK, Ted, you're back in good graces now that I think about it...

...jamming on lunch... BTW, what kind of car is this car-hop tray attached to?

...and...um...er... interesting... a 'GingerBender' pic, I guess... oof, that's BAD... and, thanks to gettyimages for whatever it is they do...

...well, there's LOADS more stuff we are all into, such as Arianna's awesome birthday cakes... ...folks draining bank accounts due to GingeBay practices... ...HueyTreatments of GingerFilms... ...Ginger's tennis prowess...
...STILL would make for one of the coolest posters EVAH...  ...continuing, how we all pretty much center 'time and space' with the year 1911...  ...taking pics of ANYthing with the word 'Ginger' on it... Katie's role as Official Ginger Research Expert (OGRE)...  ...having MAJOR dissertations regarding whether 'the dress she has on in this pic is the one she wore in the film...."  ...hunting down marriage certificates from the late twenties (a Huey exclusive)... ...warbling on about Ginger's gooberhead hubbies, and which one was the 'least gooberheady'... ...having to explain Ginger to someone born in the 21st Century... ...trying to figure out how to frame all your GingerPics (or better yet, dedicating a room in your house to Ginger (I'm still working on that one...))...  ...being able to name ALL GingerFilms, pretty much in chronological order... ...and generally remembering this thought...
...SO, in conclusion...

Again, thanks for your support of this blog!  ...and here's to another five, and five more, and five more, and...
...KEEP IT GINGERY, Y'ALL!!! (...a phrase I 'borrowed' from BethRose (well, except the "y'all" part, of course...)...BTW, if you're wondering, the pic above is probably my FAVE 'non-blonde' Ginger pic...)

Love to all of y'all!!! ...well, except the dudes...who get a 'rock on, dude!' instead... :-)
