Post-Exhibit Thoughts...

...well, just a 'brief' update, y'all... spent about 2 hours or so in the Ginger Rogers Century exhibit at Boston University (Go Terriers!) Monday... and it was even that much more than advertised by those who preceded my visit.
Of course, fellow Gingerologists have well documented the specifics of the incredible items on display at the Boston University Gottlieb Center, but there were a few specific requests out there from y'all...
First, this:
...the 'heretofore unseen' pic of Ginger...which is quite frankly one of the most striking photos I've ever seen of her... it took about 3-4 shots before I could get this one, as lighting, old digital cameras, and my general hyped-up state at the time all conspired to make this a tough capture...but I wasn't leaving the room without it! :-)  ...honestly, I am not the best photographer in the world, so I am pretty jazzed that this one came out as well as it did...the 'overall' photo in the display has some background to it, but of no real consequence when one considers the foreground image...

Second, this:

...by special request for Molly - Ginger's working script of 'Hello Dolly', with her own notes on it... pretty neat stuff - I am pretty big on handwriting, for whatever reason - I think it really does capture a person's overall personality - and of course, Ginger's is just SO...Gingery!!!

Well, I have quite a few more pics, and some pretty neat tales from Beantown... overall it's a very neat town, and I highly suggest it for your traveling itinerary.
I am compiling this on my daughter's laptop, which is OK, but a bit hard (for me), w/o a mouse...and, we really are quite busy! We are actually back near Baltimore now, and tomorrow we are heading over to Annapolis, and tomorrow evening heading out to the Orioles-Red Sox game at Camden Yards (if it isn't rained out...) - so, I probably won't be able to do a great deal of posting until we arrive back in the Ham by the weekend...I will be able to 'have my thoughts gathered' a bit more then...
But, yes, indeed... there IS a Virginia, y'all...and the documentation of her incredible life and career is on display in Boston...hope y'all can get there - it's worth it!
KIG, y'all!

    1. ...Hopefully I can get another post finished up by the end of the weekend...it's one of those deals where I don't want to leave anything out... but it's just incredible stuff...you know, we've seen a good portion of those items, but to actually see them on display, as the real deal, and then SO much other stuff ya can't see anywhere else, is just a bit mind-blowing...

  2. Oh, oh! I just love that photo!

I'm reading this in rainy England and so jealous! Can't wait for a full report about the exhibition - do you think it'll travel abroad? (in my dreams!!)

Have a safe journey home, do tell all on your return!

    1. ...it's an 'instant classic', to be sure!

the exhibit was to be moved to New York, but that never materialized, for whatever reason... the plans are to keep the bulk of it at BU, for research - it will be 'archived', only accessible to students or whomever is doing research on Ginger...heck, that's pretty much what we do on a daily basis, right? But it's good to know all these artifacts will be in a secure location (I presume...).
I'm back home now, and hope to get an extensive post out in a few days!

    2. ...BTW, great job on the Olympics! I saw a pretty good bit of the events over there... amazing how it generally 'takes over' the whole region, even if you're not at the 'epicenter'... when it was in Atlanta in 1996, we even got in on some of the prelim soccer matches in b'ham...and it was a 'once in a lifetime' event, which, for some cockamamie reason, I didn't partake in...oh well.

  3. YAY!!! You got a picture of that pic. That one is pretty awesome, and I like how she looks in it. Thank you soooo much!!! :D
Have fun the rest of the time there, can't wait to go out on our vacation in a couple of days.
    Have an awesome day!

    1. yupyupyup...for whatever reason, I was as nervous as a cat trying to snap that pic...not sure why... I was worried someone would come in and say I couldn't take pics... plus, we have a '20th-century' aged digital camera, which is on its last legs, honestly...and coupled with my lack of photographic prowess, it's a wonder ANYTHING was documented! But I am REALLY proud of that pic...wish I had a 'wall-sized' one of it...it's just that awesome!
Hope you are well into your vacation! We had a great time, but LOTS of traveling... over 2,700 miles on the minivan (you read that correctly...oof). Have fun!!!

  4. Huey, I adore you!
Thank you so much for the pic and the script!
    Wait till Ginger11 see this!

I hope you had fun. Can't wait to hear all about it! Take care and thank you again!

    1. Molly! First of all, after perusing your pics, and then what I could muster, it's pretty evident that there's a lot of 'operator error' on my end, and probably a bit of older equipment as well...I stood there for at least 5 minutes with the sole objective of focusing in on the Oscar statue 'nameplate' I could NOT get it to focus... period.
I WAS fortunate enough to capture the indescribable pic in the montage, which is just breathtaking. And, hope the script pics are the ones you were looking for - for Hello, Dolly! - just killer stuff...anything with Ginger's 'notes' on it is priceless!
Will try to get out the 'extensive' post regarding the journey by the weekend's end... KIG - GUP!

    2. Huey - Those Dolly! pics are exactly what I wanted. Thank you again. And thanks for that indescribable pic from the montage too. There is something really Garbo-ess about it. A side of Ginger we didn't often see from that "vamp" angle.

I'm sure your pics will be beautiful. The Oscar was just the worsth to photographed. Mostly because there wasn't enough light on it. I got my pic of the nameplate using a 150' zoom and polarized lens to photograph thru the glass and still I didn't get a clear shoot! ;)

Can't wait to see your pics.

    3. ...well, I pretty much have a 'point-and-shoot' number, with a 'modest' zoom...and 'general' modes for daylight, night, etc....did not use a flash, of course, so I at least figured that out... but hopefully the ones to follow in the upcoming post will be legible enough...

      Thanks, Molly!!!

    1. ...it's just so hard to describe the feeling ya get when you walk in there, isn't it? And, there's maybe been 2-3 occasions in my life where it was just dang near impossible to leave a location or situation - and of course this was one of those... I just wanted to stay there indefinitely! I did get to go over everything quite thoroughly - took eh, over 2 hours, for sure... but wanted to start over again! I'll try to describe all that in the 'big post' to follow in a day or two... but it is just the greatest (non-family related) thing I've ever had the opportunity to view...period.

    2. i totally get ya, even on my second trip in June, it was a total thrill walking into the exhibition room, even after the 15 odd hours in March..

    3. Well, I was on a somewhat abbreviated schedule, although I was going to stay long enough to check out everything... ended up being 3 hours or so...but yeah, I could have stayed QUITE a bit longer... it was just tough to walk away from it...

  6. This is really one of the most amazing pictures that I've seen of hers... In style it reminds me of some Garbo pictures that were taken while she was still in New York waiting for her Hollywood-call! Who took this picture of Ginger? Do you know more about it?

    1. I REALLY wish I had more info on it, AT - there was not much on it, as it was one of about 12 or so in a 'collage' at the entry to the exhibit...all of the other pics are familiar to the average G-ologist, but this one wasn't...and we were all wondering WHERE this one has been!
Roberta Olden, Ginger's assistant in the last 20 years or so of her life, donated these items to BU... so she would be the source of that picture's story...one day, maybe we can find out... but yes, it is somewhat different than any other GingerPic... it's truly just a devastatingly beautiful capture of our girl.

  7. Indeed that is an intriguing photo. Perhaps that is Ginger's vamp look? Can't wait to get the full story. Also I see Baltimore won the ball game which probably made being with the home crowd fun. Have a safe trip home.

    1. Well, now y'all know what to get the Hu-ster for Christmas... one of these years, I am going to get enough corage up to contact Roberta Olden, and this will be one of the umpteen questions I'll have for her... first off, I'm not even sure when it was taken...was it in the early 30's or early 40's? The period in-between was the 'blonde years', of course, and this one is obviously one of the 'brunette - reddish' phases... I'm wanting to say it's around the 'Kitty Foyle' years...
...well, the game was quite fun... we were actually amongst a fair contingency of BoSox fans...O's fans outnumbered them, but there were enough scattered around to make it interesting... but Camden is really a nice park. Couldn't get into Fenway, as Springsteen was setting up shop... but did drive all around it, and got some cool pics around the perimeter... it's their 100th birthday, so some special logos and stuff there... and yes, there were quite a few er...'interesting' things out there regarding their disdain for the Yanks... as to be expected. Dang, how did they become such rivals? It's not like they are all that close! Seems like Baltimore and NY would be a bigger rivalry... oh well...it was really fun on all accounts!

  8. I'm just guessing, but I'd go with the 1930-1932 time period for the picture.

    1. Lady F, as usual, is probably right...there's a pretty strong resemblance to her look in The Tenderfoot, although the hair color differs...but heck, they can change that up at the drop of a hat...

    1. veryVERY much so...it's one of those that make you say, "...now where the heck has THIS picture been?" Not that there aren't a gazillion incredible pics of Ginger out there anyway, but...this one is pretty unique...I wonder about the 'backstory' to it...dang it, I need to get in touch with Roberta!!!
thanks for commenting, ALD!!! Hope all is well with ya!
