...TWO Best Buds!
...of course, Ginger and Lucy were good buds... as Ginger and Lela championed Lucy on the RKO lot... of course, she was to become a superstar regardless, primarily on the 'small screen'.
Ginger of course had gobs of friends and/or folks she liked to work with, many of which were not in the spotlight... but for those who were/are in the spotlight, here's a few of my fave 'GingerBuds' to continue the theme for the day...
...with Joan Blondell... dang these two should have made more films together! As is, they were in two together: Gold Diggers of 1933, and the one shown in the pic, Broadway Bad, which REALLY needs to get restored and distributed... I'm not sure how much they 'hung out' off-set or whatever, but it just seemed like they would have been pretty tight buds even in real life.
...with Angela Landsbury, at the Ziegfeld Follies in the late sixties... Ginger was the reigning Queen, and was passing the crown over to the new Queen, Angela. I KNOW these two got along well, as they were neighbors! Of course, Ms. Landsbury was one of the speakers at the GingerCentury Exhibit grand opening at BU back in 2011, so... 'nuff said!
...with Ann Miller...look out when two hoofin' dames get together!!! (man, how cool would it have been to be present at this shindig!!!) ...Ann was in Stage Door with Ginger; she got the part by basically lying about her age... she was pretty dang young at the time, but it worked out well, as Ann became one of the most well-known dancing ladies ever... and yeah, I think she and Ginger got on pretty well together by the looks of this pic...
...with Carol Channing - this is a publicity pic for "The First Traveling Saleslady", which they played buds who were trying to break into the barbed wire trade in the Old West... tough gig... these two would later have something in common, as Ginger took over the role of Dolly Levi from Ms. Channing in the Broadway production of "Hello, Dolly!" in the mid-60's. They made a pretty neat duo in this film, which was overall 'kinda fluffy' as to its content... but very Gingery nevertheless.
...with Dinah Shore - I believe they were pretty good buds, although some folks on the internet have tried to stir up controversy between the two - take, for instance, THIS video, which was so bizarre that I just had to link it... not sure why... ANYWAY, seems like Ginger was on Dinah's Place quite a bit, so... I think the conspiracy theorists are all wet...if not in some cases just...strange...
...Ginger and Una were GREAT buds in 42nd Street... again, wish the two could have been in a few more films. The "Shuffle Off to Buffalo" number they share is mandatory Gingerology fare! Una played the 'typical sidekick / gal pal' in many films... another one of my faves she was in was with Harlow in "Red-Headed Woman"... another classic!
...I'm not sure how much Ginger and Bette kept up with each other over the years, but I have seen 'latter-day' pics of the two, and appear to be pretty chummy... all I know is, this pic from 193...2? ish? ...is almost unbearably cute, as these two young actresses were ready to take different routes, but each VERY prolific.
...well, that's a few of Ginger's gal pals over the years - there are plenty more, of course... ...and in case you're asking about DUDES that Ginger were involved with...well, you KNOW there's quite a few more days left in this exercise... ;-)
Until the THIRD Day...

...On the First Day of GINGER... on GINGEROLOGY...
...An Oscar for Miss Kitty!
...Ginger was VERY deserving of the 1940 Best Actress Oscar for her superb performance in RKO's Kitty Foyle... there were other awesome actresses up for the award that year (including the two who are (rightly so) perennially tabbed the greatest actresses of all time, Kate Hepburn and Bette Davis), but Ginger won over the Academy with a surprising turn in a major dramatic role she sank her pretty pearly whites into.
Ms. Hepburn actually turned down the role, feeling it wasn't 'refined enough' for her talents... and she really would have been SO wrong for the role, so it's great that she declined. I think Jimmy preferred to hang with Ginger at the Award Ceremony, anyway...
Ginger was given a heroes' (heroines'?) welcome back on the RKO set of 'Tom, Dick, and Harry' the next day, with a '21 top hat and cane' salute by the staff. It seems like she got on REAL well with the RKO bunch, which is probably why she (and Lela) hung around there for dang near a decade...
There are, as always, modern-day detractors who note that Ginger 'shouldn't have even been nominated, much less won'... well, y'all KNOW where those folks can take that smack... as for me, her performance was flawless, and probably a bit unexpected from the Academy at the time...which no doubt added to their lean towards Ginger for the win. The thought of the day was "Ginger's a song and dance girl", which, of course, was correct... but it was pretty goofy to try to limit her abilities. Thank goodness the RKO brass decided to allow her to try a few dramas, as the rest of course, is history.
...this pic of Ginger and Lela is TOTALLY priceless, as y'all know...
As for Hu, I was VERY lucky to have been able to run thru the GingerCentury exhibit at Boston University back in 2011... and to see Ginger's Oscar on display... it's REALLY cool to see all of the previously posted pics of Ginger with her 'gold man' and then know it was the same one I saw... just wish I had had a bit better camera at the time...
Just one more pic of a bit more seasoned Ginger with the award occurs below... she still has that look of pride (good, DESERVED pride, not 'haughty' pride) and accomplishment in her eyes... she TRULY appreciated it, as validation of her awesome talent (not that it should have EVER been in doubt, right?)
...man, it's the penultimate piece of Gingerbilia, y'all... ...by the way, Christmas IS nigh... ...and I've TRIED to be pretty good all year... so... I'll be looking under the tree pretty intensely...
...so, there's the FIRST day of GINGER... pretty hard to top this aspect of Ginger's career, as it was obviously the apex... but she had quite a few other wickedawesome moments before as well as after this one, and we'll probably touch on a few of them later in this 'series'... and a LOT of the posts will be a bit on the 'lighter' side, but hopefully entertaining nevertheless...
Until TOMORROW (the SECOND Day of GINGER)...

...Y'know, we REALLY need to get a better yule tree here at G-ology... but the trimmings are just PEACHY! ;-)
A new post will be... posted... around Midnight CST... 12:01 A.M. each day, if possible...

...Milk Bottles Available Again!
...from the TCM store, these bottles are again available, at quite a reduced cost! Here's the link to the spot on the TCM site:
TCM site - Ginger Rogers Milk Bottles
I am pretty sure most of y'all have already purchased one or more of these from the initial offering (I'm with you in that group), so, if you know someone else who would like one or more, or if YOU would just want a couple more, this is a nice opportunity.
If you read the comments for this item on the site, there are a few 'contrary' comments regarding the item, which, of course, ruffles the feathers of your author. Well, here is the response from THE authority on all things Ginger, none other than Ms. Roberta Olden (hopefully she doesn't mind me copying over this from the Ginger Message Board on IMDb site (which is pretty cool, BTW - go over there and participate!)):
Hi everybody .... I see TCM has reduced the price of the Ginger Rogers Ranch Quart Milk Bottles ... a really good price! And I see that if you order over $49, there is free shipping...
Pick some up for holiday gifts!
Contrary to what some purchasers have stated, the milk bottles are the real thing, manufactured in 1942 and from Miss Rogers 4R ranch dairy ... The signature on the COA is genuine and from the trustee of the estate (I didn't have the heart to ask him to personally sign over 500 milk bottle COA's so he gave me permission to reproduce his signature on the COA).
I certainly enjoy reading all the wonderful comments from fans on here ... you love her almost as much as I do :)
Roberta
...good enough for ME!
Hope this helps y'all out if you are thinking of purchasing one or more of these... it really is a cool piece of Gingerbilia to own... hope everyone out there gets one!
Y'all have a great 'Turkey Day Prep' week... it's almost that time!!!

...random GingerMoment of the day...
...occurred whilst helping out my daughter with her chemistry homework (which seems a bit advanced for 8th Grade, but maybe not... I know I didn't have this stuff when I was her age...) ...anyway, I drug out my old college chemistry book, just flipping through the 700+ pages, and just happen to land on this one:
...check out the 'Figure Description' to the left of the picture... how RANDOM is THAT? I mean, how many textbook pics actually call out where the pic was TAKEN? ...although, it is pretty sad the description talks of the demise of the plant due to acid rain... ...also, this was stumbledupon while watching Missouri play Mississippi State in football... if anything, it reminds me to get some Ginger stuff rolling this weekend, which should be a doable proposition, as it is to be quite soggy in South Gingerville this weekend... so... stay tuned!
...BTW, THIS pic is MUCH better representative of our Independence Rose, don'tchathink?
yupyupyup...
in the interim...
KIG, Y'all!!!
