Ginger December...

...Greetings, all!!! Hope the advent of the Holiday Season is an exhilarating experience thus far for all of you, and at least relatively stress-free! Honestly, I do not have that many GingerChristmas pics... of the following three, only one is obviously Christmas, although the other two seem to fit the topic as well...

First off, a 'programming note'... TCM will air Upper World tomorrow at 5:30 PM Eastern... a pretty good movie, even without a full complement of Ginger... cause even a LITTLE Ginger is FAR better than none...right? :-) ...It's worth watching, if only to get 'powder-puffed'! Trust Huey on this one... :-]

Second (minor) issue, yet burning a hole in my noggin until now... the pic that CS linked to of Ginger leaning on a desk with the weird 'finned' column deal on it... Well, after further digging and just plain ol' observation, the conclusion is that the pic is a publicity pic for the film 'Shall We Dance', as the pic below shows - when Miss Keene makes arrangements to fly the coop, quite literally...
...so, your first answer is usually the right one, Lady Fioraon!!! :-) Now that I look at it, it is SO obvious her hair style in the 'pub' pic is EXACTLY what it is when she does 'They All Laughed' - perhaps my fave Ginger Performance EVER...

OK - on to the 'topic' of this post... It's kind of a 'bummer' (to me, anyway) that Ginger didn't do a 'full scale' Christmas movie...of course, 'Bachelor Mother' and 'I'll Be Seeing You' are her two movies which take place during the holidays, and they are honestly two of my all time fav GingerFilms. BUT, neither one is really 'centered' around Christmas, which is ultimately what makes a Christmas movie, right? SO, I was thinking, with all the talk of the classic Christmas movies floating around, I wonder... which of the classics would Ginger have been best suited for? So... you guessed it... POLL TIME!!!

Simply put, which of the following Classic Christmas films would Ginger have fit the best in as the Female Lead?

Remember the Night (Barbara Stanwyck / Fred MacMurray)...

...Christmas in Connecticut (Barbara Stanwyck / Dennis Morgan)...

...The Bishop's Wife (Loretta Young / Cary Grant)...

...or, Miracle on 34th Street (Maureen O'Hara / Edmund Gwenn)?
Notice that the obvious choice of "It's a Wonderful Life" isn't included, since most of us know that Ginger turned down this part, primarily because she thought it was too 'bland'... but I think we all would LOVE to see her and JS back together, especially in the all-time Christmas fave, thus it would be VERY hard not to vote for it. I also left out "Holiday Inn", for the somewhat obvious reason that it would re-unite Ginger with Fred, thus again most likely 'skewing' the poll results.
Of the films listed, each has an interesting 'male lead'... whether this is the sole reason to vote for a particular movie for Ginger, is up to you; but consider the movie as a whole as well...

Well, that's it...vote early and often... and...

Keep It Gingery!!!

  1. Christmas in Connecticut would have reunited her with Dennis Morgan - which isnt neccessarily a bad thing in my book. Hmmm will have to think about this one!

  2. Nice pictures! I love her fur in the last one.

  3. Why can't we try it and ask Ginger to be just Bing's leading lady in Holiday Inn? She can still say "Hi Fred" off set ... ;)

You know I'm kidding. Yesterday started DANCING LADY in my home, that means Fred is now on screen in 1933 ... and Christmas 1933 I'll have him again - first time with Ginger!

Back to the 40s: I'd like to hear Ginger singing White Christmas - or better still I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS (my favorite Christmas song since I was a kid), perhaps together with Bing (whom I like much better than Frank Sinatra).

I see you just integrated the pic on which I didn't recognize Ginger. Did you look up the new STAGE DOOR issue too? Jason now published another issue on a great 1937 film you like: THE AWFUL TRUTH (on his blog MOVIES OVER MATTER)!

  4. Great photos, Huey! And what a good idea for a poll! I voted for Remember the Night. It would've been interesting to see Ginger in a film with Fred MacMurray.

  5. Hmmm.....I'd have to say it's a toss up between Miracle on 34th Street and Christmas In Connecticut. She would have been great in either one!

  6. SG: Yes - 'C in C' would have given DM a third crack at winning Miss Rogers over (well 'timeline'-wise, I guess the 'second crack', since it was post-'Kitty'(1940) but pre-'PS'(1950) - strangely enough, 'C in C' is equidistant between the two (1945) ) - but it would have been an interesting setup.

Camille: Glad you enjoyed the pics - yep, that is QUITE a fur there...very nice! :-] Hope all is well for you - is school out for you yet?

CS: I know, it would be awesome to see Ginger in 'H.I.'... but ya know, I'm just at the point to where ANY movie I watch, my subconscious supplants Ginger for WHOEVER the lead actress happens to be... I watched 'The Lady Eve' last night, and Stanwyck was simply awesome in it... but I just couldn't shake comparisons to Ginger if she had the role... oh well, guess it's just something I'll have to deal with henceforth... 'The Awful Truth', eh? I'll have to check that out... LOVE Irene... but that's another 'Insert Ginger Here' deal for ol' Huey...

JH: Thanks for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed the pics... well, honestly, I haven't seen 'Remember the Night' (although I have it 'queued' in my 'to-see movies'...) looks pretty cool - Barbara alone is worth the viewing, and I've always thought F-Mac was a pretty cool actor - probably a bit underrated... Ginger and he would have been interesting... hey, is William Demerest in this one? you know, 'Uncle Charley'! He cracks me up!!! He was in 'The Lady Eve' (which I watched last night) and he, along with Eric Blore, had me rolling!

Gingerella: Those are the 2 of the 4 I have seen! (I am WAY behind on 'Holiday Movies'...) I see her in either one, maybe a bit more in 'C in C', just because it is a more 'meaty - slapstick' role... of course Ginger sometimes went out of her way to avoid those, lest she be 'stereotyped' - A wise move, I reckon...

Well, thanks to all for the comments! And be sure to vote...tell your friends...or even your nodding aquaintances!!! :-]

    KIG in GingerDecember!!! :-)

  7. Ginger would have been great in all 4, but the one I would most like to have seen her in is Christmas in Connecticut. It would have been perfect for her comedic talents. And finally she would get Dennis Morgan. :D

  8. CUTE LITTLE TAIL IN THE EVENING

Some guest from Finland has googled out this:

    "hottest ginger"

He certainly got my article ...

"sweet & hot | The Genius in Ginger"

Rather technical that article and I'm very much afraid it didn't really make him "hot". :D

  9. Fioraon - I pretty much went with C in C as well... it seemed like the most 'Gingery' of the bunch... I just wish she would have been in one of the 'perennial' Christmas Classics...

CS: Ah, the 'Genius of Ginger'... AbFab post, to be sure!!! Ya know, even the 'technical' Ginger gets me pretty hot and bothered... of course, I AM an engineer, ya'know... ;-]

  10. Oh, you must see it! It's a really enjoyable movie! Unfortunately, William Demerest isn't in it, but he was great in The Lady eve! I love that one, too!

  11. FINAL POLL RESULTS:

    Miracle on 34th Street - 7 votes
Christmas in Connecticut - 5 votes
Remember the Night - 2 votes
    The Bishop's Wife - 0 votes

...I went with 'C in C', but '34th' is a pretty good one Ginger would fit into as well...

Thanks again to all who voted!

    KIG!
