Professional Sweetheart turns 80...

...on this date in 1933, the RKO film 'Professional Sweetheart' was released.
This is one of my favorite early Ginger films (currently #4 on the 'GingerFilms' rankings), as she is at a pretty advanced level of sassiness here... and is beautiful throughout, of course... as a 'spoiled' star who plays a squeaky-clean girl-next-door on the radio, but has designs on cutting loose in real life. Her handlers decide to hook her up with one of her male fans who write in to her, and to set up a marriage between them, to not only keep a 'wholesome image' for her radio show, but also to appease her real life demands... of course, times change, and people change, as the story proceeds...
The only 'fail' this film has is that they dubbed Ginger's singing spots with another singer, a soprano-type...  Norman Foster plays his 'aw shucks' character to nice effect, and the strong supporting cast includes Frank McHugh, Allen Jenkins, Zazu Pitts and Franklin Pangborn.
...here's the GingerFilm blog for the movie, where you'll find the HueyReview, as well as other info (more features pending, of course...) :

...hey, where does this one rank in YOUR list? Hopefully y'all have seen it...while there is no 'official' DVD currently available for it, TCM shows it on a fairly regular basis... so hope you get to catch it soon.

As for Hu, I am a bit under the weather, with a sinus infection...of sorts, anyway... cut grass all day and sucked in too much dust and other niceties, so... but I'm medicating, eating hot salsa and other stuff to get things shook up in the snoot... it usually gets knocked out overnight (I'll sleep sitting up on the couch, tho...) ...all that to say, this will delay the HueyTreatment of SOM a bit... but hopefully not too much.
In the meantime, hope y'all are having a splindiferous weekend, and remembering to...

Keep It Gingery!!!

  1. I'd like to exclaim how can it be that old :O but of course it is! That makes Flying Down to Rio almost 79 and a half ;)

    1. It's hard to fathom, and it's great to know this one is 'saved' for our generation and hopefully for those to follow... and yep, Rio is getting closer...if I remember, it was released on New Year's Eve 1933...

thanks for the thoughts, Kat! I am doing much better...honestly, if I sleep sitting upright (more or less) just one night, I am fine, but... typically I end up with a sore back and/or neck...and thankfully that didn't happen, so great results!

      Have a Gingery week, Kat!

    2. imdb.com cites general release as 29th dec 1933 and its premiere on 22nd dec, i remember hearing an interview with Gene Raymond about how he came across queues going on for more blocks than he cared to count to see "Rio" at Radio City Music Hall and he just didn't get it, he hoped it was gonna disappear, i just hope he wasnt too disappointed about not being the main attraction hehehe

  2. "Professional Sweetheart" is one of my favorite Ginger movies. It is sassy and makes fun of everyone, especially show business, and Ginger is GREAT in it.

Sorry to read you are under the weather. A great homemade decongestant if you are all clogged up is:
1/2 (half) teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/4 (quarter) teaspoon of ground GINGER (no kidding)
Pour 2 cups boiling water over it and let it sit for 20 minutes. Strain it and drink it. Adding honey makes it more delicious, IMO, and helps soothe a sore throat if you have one. It is also very good cold, over ice. Be careful, it will stain your teeth. So if you drink a lot of it, use a straw or a whitening toothpaste (you'll have to figure out how to use each yourself, haha).

    Feel better and KIG!

    1. Hmmm... interesting... I will definitely give that a spin next time I have issues (I'm in pretty good shape now (see my reply to Kat above)...unfortunately, it WILL occur again...usually once every 6-7 weeks...) and oof, I know about teeth...I just had my 6-month cleaning...it's rough...I always feel bad for the lady cleaning, as my teeth just somehow have...buildup (bleck). I need to do a 'whitening' procedure NOW, while they are still clean! Anyway, thanks again for the elixir! KIG, 'e'!!

  3. Huh, that's weird. I guess my comment didn't go through, I commented a couple days back. :/

Well what I said was "Happy Bday" to Professional Sweetheart. Pretty soon all the Ginger films will become old.
What I'm excited for is I'll be able to see most of the 100 anniversaries of them!

    KIG!!!

  4. hmmm... I kinda thought you did as well, but maybe I'm thinking of the last post... well, at any rate, sorry for the snafu, and whatever the source of it was... and glad you came in and re-commented!

This year has a bunch of them turning 80, as '33 was her 'B&B' year for roles...what, 11 or 12 in that year?

I need to set up more of a 'scheduled' deal for these anniversaries...in conjunction with the GingerFilm blogs, of course... time is always a factor - oof.

Hope your summer is off to a rousing start, GF!

    KIG!
