The 'Hollywood' sign... and Ginger's connection to it...

Y'all have probably heard all about this, but the iconic 'Hollywood' sign is in danger of being removed in favor of a mountaintop resort... now why they can't leave the sign where it is, is beyond me...wouldn't this be pretty much a drawing point? "Hey, I stayed at the Blah Blah Hotel..." "Where?" "You know, the one by the 'Hollywood' sign!"
Anyway, Ginger had a 'history' with the land where the sign is (Cahuenga Peak)... it involves Howard Hughes (BTW...my middle name is Hughes, hence the moniker 'Huey') ...ol' Howie bought the land, and was going to build Ginger a mansion there...but legal issues arose, and of course Ginger figured out Howie was a bit too 'eccentric' (what they call crazy millionares), so she left him.

After checking out info, I ran across this cool blog, the author of which is apparently a BIG proponent of 'Saving the Sign'... Here is a post link describing in greater detail the Ginger / Howard angle to this story:

And, the most recent post, noting that the 'deadline' for gathering $$$ for the sign property has been extended to April 30th, 2010:

Hopefully, a few Big Players will pony up and save it - I mean, $1 mill? That's not much in Hollywood, is it? It would be a shame to see this destroyed... I haven't been there, but obviously recognize the sign as iconic. Here's hoping it remains...

  1. WHAT????!!!! I can't believe it.

I'm really struggling these days: Trying to get a VISA Card, hearing from the bank-lady that I'll have to use my pincode on the internet (the same I use for my savings account!) and pondering about certain heavenly DVD offers possibly being just phony... - But those headaches are nothing but headaches about peanuts, because THIS ... IS a National C#A#L#A#M#I#T#Y#!!!!!!

But wait a minute ... won't there be a National Rebellion against that Hollywood Sign removal? Like those great rebellions during the depression years in the 30s: Hundreds of Thousands John Wayne Fans riding over the plains towards Washington ... thousands of Prairie-Wagons – only this time from WEST to EAST ... Millions of Marilyn Monroe fans (well I never liked her much) screaming and attacking with their fingernails.

    That'd be really somet'n VKM-fan.

    ... but how can one sleep now .... i'm afraid i can't ...

  4. I'm surprised some rich celebrity hasn't ponied up the cash to save it yet. Maybe they're holding out until the last minute to get the publicity of being the savior?

  5. ...I remember somewhere that the original sign was 'Hollywoodland', and I think it was just promoting the area so folks would buy real estate in the valley or whatever below...
I just don't see where it is getting in anybody's way... But I do look for someone to get them 'over the top', financially...

If anything, just get the letters and move them somewhere else... that would at least keep the 'icon', and the folks can build whatever they are wanting to...

  6. One day they'll move the moon, to build a space-penthouse. And every evening we'll have a rising penthouse instead of the moon. Wouldn't that be romantic?

Isn't Governor Schwarzenegger doing anything about it? Congress and White House couldn't I'm afraid, because this is an affair of the State of California.

I don't know much about the Hollywood scene today, but I guess they're furious. This sign is famous all over the world, like the pyramids in Egypt!

  7. ...I think part of the trouble is that California is pretty much outta dough as is, and is trying to keep the 'mandatory' services afloat...where I live has the exact same problem...the county is delaying an inevitable filing for bankruptcy, due to some major inproprieties regaridng a sewer project which never materialized, but had a lot of $$$ change hands...
Anyway, I will try to keep updated on this, and see what happens...sure y'all will see the stuff on it, too...

  8. Well, reckon everyone knows by now that Hugh Hefner put up the rest of the $$$ to save the sign... good deal, Hef... I am not too big on his overall 'philosophy' on life, but he seems to do a fair amount of charity stuff, which cannot be faulted. So hats off to Hugh from Huey...
