...I think it just kinda rubs me the wrong way that the phrase 'folks today have never heard of Ginger' keeps popping up... guess we have some work to do!!!

  1. Unfortunately, it's true. I'm 20, and none of my friends outside of my film school circle are familiar with her. If I say "You know, Fred and Ginger" they often recognize that pairing but have never seen her or knew that she did more than musicals. I think TCM has some work to do. I was disappointed that she didn't get a birthday tribute this year.

  2. Makes me want to cry. To me (to lots of us, I'm sure), she's one of those cultural icons. I guess I've never realized that she's an icon for a different culture than my own. Sad...but that's why your blog is so important.

  3. Well, hopefully some folks will start to 'discover' Ginger...it's good that Warner is putting out some of her movies...every little bit helps.
I was also a bit 'let down' by TCM on 7/16 this year - I figured they would at least show ONE Ginger movie... in fact, it seems like they are slowly starting to 'mix in' 'newer' movies (i.e., from the 60's and 70's)... that's how it started on AMC, which is now just into 80's and NEWER - but who also used to show 'Classic' movies (BTW, my little girl cracked me up the other night, saying - "what's coming on the classical movie channel tonight?" ...which begs the question, when does 'Classic' become 'Classical'?)
Anyway, TCM DID have a 'day of Ginger' back in the spring...7 in a row, although most were 'early' ones, 'Suicide Fleet', 'Carnival Boat', 'You said a Mouthful', and 'The Tip-Off' - but also showed 'In Person', 'Star of Midnight', and 'Professional Sweetheart'.
I would like to see them create multiple TCM channels, each dedicated to a specific 'era'...(are you reading this, Ted?) BTW - I am going to post somewhere on here when Ginger movies are scheduled for TCM - You can get it off the TCM site pretty easy, but hopefully listing them will be nice, too. I think there is a Fox Movie channel, too, which I do not have, but will see what their schedule is, too...

  4. I know-- that frustrated me as well. I don't get TCM, but visited my sister (who does) on that day, hoping to see a lot of Stanwyck and Ginger. No dice. :/

    Haha, "classical." That's brilliant. :)

That's a really good idea, and Ted's probably reading this. I have a feeling he visits random blogs to see what they think of him. ;)

  5. ...Barbera Stanwyck is cool... I saw the movie she was in with Fred McMurray...well about half of it - liked it tho - they were travelling to see her mom, and everyone they ran into gave them grief...just can't think of the name of the movie... I also remember her in the TV show 'Big Valley' - they were reruns 10 years or so after the initial run, but still pretty 'recent' at the time...thought she was cool in that as the mom.

...Did just finish watching 'Gilda' tonight... Rita Hayworth was awesome in that... 'Put the Blame on Mame', indeed...good job on today's schedule, Ted, considering no VKM...(don't worry, folks, Gingerology is not in any danger! Rita rocks, but Ginger relentlessly, thoroughly, and infinitely ROCKS!!!)

At the end of the day, there is just not enough GINGER on TCM! Just a couple of hers a month is not sufficient! I am actually taping (yes, with a VCR...quit snickering!) each time Ginger is on, even if I already have the DVD - my DVD-VCR combo is a DVD recorder, too, so I can tape commercial-free from TCM and burn my mom a DVD copy of whatever is shown...plus, I just keep the VCR recording as a 'back-up'...can't have too many copies, can you? I am now working on securing an off-site facility to store the 'back-ups'... or is that a bit too 'retentive'?

  6. Was the Barbara Stanwyck movie "Remember the Night"? They played it a little while ago on TCM, I think. Oh golly, she's terrific-- if you ever get the chance, check out Ball of Fire, or The Lady Eve. Actually, I love all the stuff she's done that I've seen.

Haha, yeah-- Victoria on Big Valley. Just dandy.

I love Rita Hayworth in Gilda (though you're right-- Ginger rocks more).

Hahaha, whoa-- an off site facility? I think I'm jealous. :)

  7. I will definitely be on the lookout for her. It was weird, I was just over at my mom's this morning,. and she mentioned a movie Barbara Stanwyck was in! ( this is a weird 'aside', but for some reason I can NEVER spell the name 'Barbara' corectly! just one of those things...)
...maybe my Mom's place will serve as the 'off-site facility'... I am trying to hook her up with as many VKM movies as I can...
...funny about the 'Gilda' movie, my wife came in and started watching it, and after a few minutes, said, "...now SHE is beautiful." I said "...well, yes...WHAT? Now wait a minute! Compared to WHOM, pray tell?" ...actually, I know she likes to get me riled up (jokingly, of course) in matters of VKM, for whatever reason... and that did the trick!

  8. Haha, ooh, cool! Which movie did she mention, do you know? Usually my urge is to spell it "Barbra" because of Streisand, but have to generally go back and fix it. :)

That's awesome! Hope it all works out well.

Hahaha, yeah, exactly what I was thinking-- compared to whom? ;)

That's okay though, when I was younger (stupid me) I didn't think Ginger was terribly beautiful. But as I got to see (and hear) more of her, I think she's gorgeous. Kind of a blonde Vivien Leigh. And it might just be me, but I think she got lovelier as she aged.

  9. Well, not sure which Stanwyck movie my Ma was referring to, but she was talking about Bette Davis, who was the 'topic' on TCM last night, so it might have been one with both of them in it, if there was one...not sure.

  10. ...well there you go. I think my Ma liked that one, so I will be on the lookout for it - sure that Barbera and Bette is interesting matchup!

Wow, you don't have TCM? And STILL have all that great knowlege of 'classic', nay, 'classical' movies? That's very impressive... think you have FORGOTTEN more about movie stuff than I could ever hope to know about, movie-wise...well, I am just concentrating on VKM for now, and maybe 'branch out' sometime in the future to others...

  11. Indeed! Two of the best actresses of the time.

Aw, you flatter me. Nope, no TCM...the bane of my existence, that is. Hopefully my college will offer it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, haha.

Sometimes just one person (Ginger in your case-- it was Judy in mine) will do it...lead the viewer into lots of different film areas. Fun stuff.
