Gingery Odds and Ends...

...well, hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend! We are catching the 'remnants' of tropical storm Lee, thus gobs of rain... but hey, good time to catch up on Gingerology, right?

Well, first off, I meant to post this link awhile back... it's from the Movies Unlimited e-letter, where they were inviting folks to submit reviews of their fave films...well, it appears the first one 'published' is none other than The Major and the Minor!  A pretty neat review of the movie

Review of The Major and the Minor from Movies Unlimited

Also, thanks to Katherine (a.k.a. Fred and Ginger Mad, and my fellow Gingerologist who appeared in Independence on 7/16/11), for informing me of what sounds like a pretty killer event in Boston, and later in NYC, which is entitled "The Ginger Rogers Century Exhibition", starting on October 24, 2011... here's the bodacious link to THAT:

Ginger Rogers Century Exhibition

And finally, just a programming note...the Professional Sweetheart review is pending...will jump on it probably tonight... I was just thinking how that role is really not that suited to Ginger, in the sense that the character is wanting to go out boozing and carousing... "sin and suffer", as it were...not really what Ginger was into in real life. But of course she does a killer job of the role...although, something tells me that Jean Harlow would have been pretty awesome in it as well...which kinda led me to believe that RKO may have been trying to turn Ginger into their version of Harlow... and not that I am saying Harlow was a 'boozer and carouser', as in fact, she was also a Christian Scientist, born in KC in March 1911...it is pretty weird about their 'correlation'...a pretty cool future post topic.

Oh yeah, before I forget, here's just a question in GENERAL for y'all out there...

What was the FIRST Ginger movie you ever saw?

This is a question I've wanted to kick out there forever, but somehow keep forgetting it... hopefully y'all will catch it and reply!!!  Actually, I also just want to see how many folks are out there active as well...it's been a bit...silent on the classic movie blogosphere lately... well, probably because school is in session, for better or worse...

Well, that's about all I have for now... hope y'all are having fun out there, and, until we re-convene...

KIG!!!

  1. Hey say! Good to see you keep writing.... I love your reviews, and you still haven't gotten to the 'big' flicks yet!

My first Ginger film was Top Hat...and my first Ginger 'solo' film was Stage Door....they were on early morning movies on TV a lot...

When you see Ben Mankawitz (sp) on TCM screenings you always get to see that pic of Ginger with the camera you have up there...coolness!

  2. Wish you all a perfectly swell Labor Day.

Watch that other comment Huey, I've sent you a Gingery icon! Sweet&Hot already has an icon, you see it on blogrolls/ reading lists/ sidebars -- it should appear in the upper corner of the blog as well (instead of the blogspot-icon). Although it takes a little time until it appears in that corner -- I don't know why this is.

An ico-symbol-icon has 32X32 pixels at the most, but nevertheless I was able to condense Ginger's face to that size, and it's still Ginger.

  3. My first Gingery movie???

I can't recall -- I must have been a child. I saw an awful lot of old movies in my parental home on tv -- many of them several times.

Most of the films I have on DVD now, I had already seen on tv a long time ago. I bought an awful lot of films since fall 2009 and now I'm astonished how many old films I saw during my youth and childhood days.

  7. Tom: thanks for the kind words regarding reviews! They are pretty fun to assemble, but you're right that when the BIG ones show up, it's gonna be tough to rank them...but I'll manage.. as for the Ginger w/camera pic, yeah, I about fell out of my chair the first time I saw that pic in the background of one of his intros... wonder if anyone has 'dibs' on that whenever they 'retire' it?
Top Hat - probably my first GandF movie, honestly... can't specifically remember which one. Stage Door... classic movie, and probably another one shown frequently enough to qualify as many folks' first exposure to Ginger...

CS: SO good to hear from you! Again, I'll check out the icon deal... I will probably need some advice before it's over, tho...

F&GM: Top Hat, eh? I think that is probably a lot of people's first exposure to GandF... it is the 'textbook' film of the 'series', to be sure...

msciel: Pretty good 'first films' for you, too! 'Swing Time' was Ginger's fav of the GandF series, and I KNOW she held 'Kitty' close to her heart as well...

annonymous: er...ok... NOTE - that was actually me...I have re-configured the 'comments' section to allow ANYONE to comment, even w/o signing in - folks have had trouble commenting for whatever reason...you probably have to 'identify' yourself, tho... and I will 'monitor' comments, so hopefully no spam or goofballs will occur here...

ALD: Also some great 'Ginger First Films"! you can't really go wrong, of course...thanks for the imput!!!

    KIG, y'all!!!

  8. ...another 'logistical' issue... I have changed to 'blogger' from VKMfanHuey, as I have created ANOTHER blog, for my daughter... and as it is on my 'account', will keep the 'cross-refernceing' to a minimum... and heck, I always sign off as 'VKMfanHuey' anyway, right? :-)

ALSO, I guess I need to add MY first Ginger movie(s)... they were "Primrose Path" and "In Person"...saw them both on AMC, back when it was actually a CLASSIC movie channel... anyway, I was in high school, and my mom was watching 'PP'...I was just passing thru, and stopped to watch...I think I fell for Ginger pretty much at first sight, even tho she was not 'made up' in that movie all that much... then 'In Person' came on... and I think that's the one that really hooked me... strangely enough, I didn't see her too often (remember, this was pre-internet, at least for me...) but I DID pick her bio up in a bookstore...was in the $5.00 section, so too good to pass up.
again, most likely Top Hat was my first GandF movie, somewhere along the way. But, when I bought the GandF box, I just started chronologically with 'Rio'...

ok - again, thanks for the input, y'all!

  9. I'm late coming to this thread but have been sidelined because of computer problems. I believe I may have posted this here in the past. A couple of guys on a classic movie forum were making a big to-do about Ginger, going on and on about her. I knew her simply as Fred's dance partner and had seen her in her older years on tv. The comments made me curious so I decided to watch the first Ginger/Fred film available, and that was Shall We Dance. I got a little way into the movie and was so impressed with Ginger that I decided to put it aside, to get all 10 movies and watch them in order. Therefore, the first film clip was Shall We Dance and the first full movie was Flying Down to Rio. By the end of that I was totally hooked. After watching those 10 I moved to her solo efforts. I can't remember which was the first.... either Once Upon a Honeymoon, Star of Midnight or Vivacious Lady. Those were the first three because of the leading actors...Cary Grant, William Powell and Jimmy Stewart :-)

  10. ...Same here regarding the 'box set'...I just went in chronological order, and although I'm pretty sure I'd seen a few of the GandF movies in the past...at least portions of them... the first true 'viewing' of these films were about 3 years ago...Christmas of 2008, when I purchased it to see if my daughter would enjoy them (she did, and still does,) and to further my knowledge of Ginger Rogers (which I only knew a small bit about at the time, but knowing that I was REALLY interested in her! :-] ).
Thanks, Lady F! Hope all is well with 'Little Man'!!!

  11. Hmmm

I think I fell in love with Lucy first so my first Ginger flick was Stage Door.

    After that was Top Hat!

  12. Hi there, Lady OGRE!!! Hope you have been doing well!

Stage Door and Top Hat... can't argue with either of those...it will be pretty tough to 'rank' those when the reviews get to that phase in her career...

Hope to see you jump back into more blogging...I know it gets mondo busy at times, but I miss the OGRE submitting new finds of Gingery goodness!!! :-)

    Hang in there, SG!!!
