...and the absence of any GingerFilms on the July 16, 2011 schedule...
...yes, I'm kind of surprised a bit too, Ginger...
First off, let's make one thing perfectly clear... TCM is no doubt the #1 classic movie network, PERIOD! It is our prime resource for not only much of Ginger's work, but for ALL the awesome movies we love from the Golden Era...let's sincerely hope it stays put, and keeps on doing what it does (and PLEASE, no 'original series', save for the occasional documentary like the one not long ago about movie studio history...).
Second, it is a bit hard to OVERTLY complain about the frequency of GingerFilms aired in general...they typically get 3-4 in a month, and honestly, after GingerMarch 2010, there's just no way the network can EVER be anything less than aces in my book, even if they NEVER show another GingerFilm...oof, that IS a bad thought, tho...
And third, I am pretty dang sure that "Mr. TCM" himself (no, not Uncle Ted), Robert Osbourne, is a substantial Ginger fan, which honestly perplexes me even more why 7/16 is Ginger-free on TCM....I'm not really sure if Rob has much input as to the scheduling at this point, anyway (I just read he is on 'sabbatical' for three months, to recuperate from surgery...here's a 'get well soon' from all the folks at Gingerology, Rob!). The closest they have to ANYTHING Gingery is the movie "Night and Day" which is about the life of Cole Porter, and stars Cary Grant - supposed to be a pretty good movie...
SO, having said all of that...while it's obvious I will still be a MAJOR supporter of TCM, it just...'disappoints' me a good bit that a GingerFilm isn't there on THAT day, of all days...it's even on a Saturday, so even showing a few early in the day would work for most folks!
I honestly haven't 'put my two cents in' over at the TCM site regarding the situation, so I guess I can't complain much, eh? Well, except over here...
OK...rant over...if you can call it that... I'm sure y'all will celebrate the Gingertennial with your fav GingerFilms anyway, right? Feel free to reply with your plans for Saturday... I am interested!
KIG, y'all... yes, ESPECIALLY you folks at TCM...what are we gonna DO with y'all?

That is kind of odd that TCM doesn't have anything. Ginger is a pretty big golden age star.
ReplyDeleteIt's especially odd given how often they have 'days' for stars.... They tend to stress Stanwyck that day anyway for some reason...
ReplyDeleteAs classic movie fan you can have different views. It must not necessarily mean idolizing stars. So if some people light the candle, and wear the pink shirt, others might feel like not to do it at all. After all TCM is a tv station, and not a congregation of idolizers. In sports idolizing sometimes goes so far, that people consider their neighbor an enemy, if he doesn't idolize the same team. So there's no reason to be disappointed, because other people don't remember a star with the same deep love. Those tv guys do just their duty, or if they care, they care for good films and have nothing but respect for the stars. We idolizers (that goes for me too) are actually a bit childish, aren't we? But this is human, and it's okay.
ReplyDeleteHi Huey! I'm trying to put together a schedule of films to watch all day for Saturday. We can live blog here and on tumblr, and live tweet to celebrate together. If you wouldn't mind sharing my latest blog post to get some reactions about which movies to pick and when to start it, I would appreciate it! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI feel bad for the Ginger fans (I'm one myself) in that at least a few of her films aren't being shown on the 100th anniversary of her birth. Perhaps having it fall on a Saturday works against the concept.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was good to see her honored in March 2010, but they really should have waited 16 months and given her the tribute to coincide with her centenary, even if films might not have been shown on the precise day. (That's what TCM did with Jean Harlow this past March; none of her films were shown on March 3, as that was the finale of the "31 Days of Oscar" promotion.)
Was it poor planning on TCM's part, an inability to procure rights for those films for July 2011, or both? Don't know...but it is unfortunate.
Audrey: You are SOOOO right... but hopefully they will 'make amends'...I DO like the 'poster' of Ginger with the camera that they have on the walls where they do the 'intro' to each movie...
ReplyDeleteRon: Well, I think it's cool they do that...maybe they try to 'space them out' a bit...but GingerMarch was over a year ago...
CS: You have a great point...it's not hard to be a bit 'biased' towards your fave... that's why I guess we should just be thankful for what they DO show, which is great...but...STILL...?
Maggie: GREAT! I will try to get something going here soon... I don't know how to tweet, but maybe I can do a 'crash course' for ginger's sake! I plan to do frequent 'updates' on what is happening ion the trip, Gingery-wise... BTW, did you just 'join up' again as Maggie Larkin? or is that a major coincidence that another Maggie has joined? Either way, it's so great to have you back!!!
VP: I guess sometimes it's easier said than done to coordinate thee things... I'm still a loyal TCM'r, for sure...
alright, y'all...I hope to be in 'multi-post' mode on the trip... nothing fancy, of course, just the details of what is happening... and maybe a pic or two if we can figure it out...
KIG, y'all!!!
