...while in New York...

...my wife's aunt and uncle stayed at the DoubleTree Guest Suites Times Square, in NYC a month or so ago... they had a great time.

The Ginger connection? Well...

The "in-house" restaurant is called... "Ginger's"! Yep, THAT Ginger! Here are some photos they took, mainly of...well, pictures of Ginger and Fred!

Pretty dang cool, eh? Well, I went to the hotel website to check out any additional info... the quite arduous link is: http://doubletree1.hilton.com/en_US/dt/hotel/LGASFDT-Doubletree-Guest-Suites-Times-Square-New-York-City-New-York/dining.do;jsessionid=40AEF9D61AD82E3BBDD5A6D5EE38076C.etc61

What I found is as follows, in text and pics:

Ginger's Restaurant

Gingers is the hotel’s new restaurant on the 5th Floor, that pays tribute to “The Roaring Twenties” when Broadway was in full swing with light-hearted musicals. These shows produced enduring standards from legends such as Cole Porter and George and Ira Gershwin, and launched the careers of actors, singers and dancers such as Ginger Rogers, who, at the age of 19, was chosen to star on Broadway in Girl Crazy. Open for breakfast, lunch and pre and post-theater dinner, Gingers is exotically decorated with Asian accents and offers an extensive menu with signature dishes and a la carte specialties.

Ginger's Restaurant is open for:
Breakfast
Lunch
Dinner

Attire: Casual

Pretty snazzy place... should have had a bit more pink, tho, dontyathink? Well, it's hard to work that into any 'modern motif', I suppose... as if I know ANYTHING about interior design, y'all... AND, pretty sure they serve beverages a bit stronger then 'Ginger Ale'... oh well... wonder if they have a soda fountain? :-]

Another thing, as nit-picky as it may be, Ginger starred in "Girl Crazy" in 1930 (hence, NOT technically 'The Roaring Twenties"...although, one could argue since there was no year "Zero", 1930 was actually the tenth year of the decade of the 1920's...or am I delving WAY too far into this??? )

ANYWAY, there appears to be some VERY cool pictures in the place, and I dig the 'logo', too... it is kinda hard to see, but the second picture in the 'first set' of pics above has Ginger leaning on the 'G'...which appears to be from the following pic... well heck....OK, 'pop' trivia question - what movie is the (totally devastating) pic below from? I WANT to say 'Professional Sweetheart', but...

SO, if you are ever in NYC, be sure to check this place out, take pics if allowed, and try to 'obtain' something with the logo on it... thru proper channels, of course... in fact, a menu from the place would be pretty nice!

Keep It Gingery, y'all!

  1. Neat!!! I want to go there!! Sounds very interesting. I had seen something like this happen(well the place wasn't called Ginger's or was a hotel.) But a few weeks ago, I went to the movies with my mom, and we saw a picture of Ginger Rogers and Fred up on the wall. I thought it wis nice to see that. Got a couple of pics, but the light was in the way, so didn't come out great, but was alright.

    Thanks on the post Jwalker!!:D
I know sometime in my life when I go to NYC, I will go there!

  4. Yet another reason to visit NYC. This one may even get me there :)

I would agree with you Huey, that pic is from 'Professional Sweetheart'. Wasn't she wearing that when they were in the cabin, and she was doing that dance her maid taught her, right before she started throwing the fit?

  6. I like the Ginger sign. The figure reminds really of Ginger, although the photo is a bit blurry. Very-very cute!

  11. Sorry too many typos! Wow, what an awesome post! You always have the best stuff honey! I just wanted to get back to you right away to tell you how much I truly appreciate all your comments. You are such a sweet, generous person and most times, I have to tell my dad, friend, whoever, "listen to this...he is so sweet," when they come to my phone. Just thought you should know that and that I appreciate them more than you know...love ya! Kori xoxo

  12. ...it WOULD be just about surreal to dine there on Ginger's 100th! (we would put CS in charge of the tunes...all Ginger...)
The only other place I have been thinking about being on that day was her actual birth house, but there's probably not too much in the way of food there... and quite frankly, probably a pretty rough neighborhood... but still want to check it out...
But hopefully the restaurant will keep this 'theme' for awhile... in general, hotel restaurants switch up stuff every now and then, especially if they are 'bought out' by another company or something... but it is just pretty dang cool that this is ANYWHERE, much less at arguably the busiest crossroads in the world!

Desarae - that is correct, I believe!!! But, which Ginger fit are you talking about? there were at LEAST three... must have been the 'honeymoon night', right?
Man, I'm telling y'all, "Professional Sweetheart"...THAT was the sassiest Ginger, PERIOD! If they only let her sing in that one, would have been REALLY cool!

OK - y'all start making reservations! Maybe the 'Ginger Play' will be somewhere in town! seriously, I might trek up to KC, and be in Indpendence at some point on 07-16-11... I just think it would be cool to say I was where it 'started' a century ago... my wife's cousin lives in KC, so... really not THAT far-fetched... well, maybe a post on this topic is in order...

AND, if anyone DOES dine at "Ginger's", or even just drops by, please report in! Take pictures!!!

  13. Forget the house in Independence I've got my eye on the house that Ginger and Lew Ayres lived in! Its on the market for 2.4 million dollars! So I all I need is 2.3999999 million dollars and have to move to California and its mine!

  14. PS - I think who ever opened this restaurant should be an honorary member of the PG!

  15. ...thanks so much, Kori! You have such an awesome blog...it always inspires me to keep plugging away on G-ology!
Hope you have safe travels, and REALLY great times! But dang, be careful in those haunted joints! I can truthfully say I am pretty lily-livered when it comes to stuff like that :-\
    KIG, Kori!

  16. SG - hiya hiya!!!

Well, yep, the Culver Canyon one? that one is REALLY cool, but no pool or tennis court, right? Her 'Gilcrest Drive' Complex (and believe me it IS... I just received some killer articles, one of which shows the place in an 'aerial view'...I got goose pimples, it's so cool...) - was the 'quintessential' Ginger abode. But yes, Culver Canyon is quite wowzers, too... heck, I couldn't afford the Independence house...

Yes, we need to hunt dowen the 'creator' of this restaurant... hmmm... might be a good idea... I mean, free publicity and all... I'm down with that... sounds like an assignment for the OGRE, no? (you know what they say, never suggest an assignment if you aren't willing to do it... ;-] )

  18. GingeyGinge: Thanks for the kind words! But woah - kinda freaked out by your 'clown post'... I'm sure you will 'resume regular Gingery GingeyGinge' posting, tho... HOPE so!! :-]

Clarissa - Agree - a good bit of bones for a place w/o a pool... that's why EYE am holding out for the Gilcrest Drive joint...
